True, but you could also add a switchbot to it. Ugly but simple and without electrical maintenance needed.

That’s why I try to make dumb things smart, not replace the dumb with smart. Like, make the switch smart, not the bulb.
Make all my tools again? I mean I have all the time in the world to pursue my hobbies but that’d be a good dent in time :-) With games it’s also about MODS. Even if the game might run, the mods mostly won’t. And I prefer mod-able games. Didn’t say it was Linux’ fault. It sure ain’t. Ok the shortcuts aren’t really an issue, that’s right.
And it’s not that I don’t KNOW Linux(es) and its benefits. As said, I am running numerous linux-machines. But just no UI. MS anti-consumer practices mostly don’t phase me either. The corporate versions of everything are way less hostile, pihole+firewall+strongly restrictive group-policies do the rest.
Linux would be greatest as the cost of one MS-Server-license alone could be a whole Xeon-Proxmox-machine running 50 linux-machines :)
No arguing with you. If I’d be just a reddit-surfing user that occasionally games a thing and does some office-stuff, there would be no reason at all for MS. I probably wouldn’t even notice the difference. But I would not even get drivers AND the controller-app for my Soundcard (creative x7 LE), and this one is VITAL. It’s not about putting time and effort into it, it’s just too many problems with no solutions for having not a tremendously great reward in the end. I would just tinker different things so that the shit does work.
I’m having ca 20 servers at home and the majority of those are linux. I love it. My main rig is still windows and will probably stay that way unless win12 won’t finally cure what pisses me off so damn much with 11. They won’t, obviously. But migration would be very hard. Most of my tools won’t run, most of my self made tools won’t run, most of my games won’t run, most 4 decades of internalization of shortcuts won’t cut it short anymore. And I won’t even start with the domain migration horrors as this one’s still MS. I would end up dual booting for eternity until I stop booting up one of the two.
So…my point is. I use the right tool for the right job.
Multiple hosts. Win2024/hyperv and proxmox
And some minor, less important ones.
All backup to a central server, which does a daily backup of the backup onto another nas. In case of emergency, just grab nas.
I dunno how that would be a trustworthy gauge. We talk here and i still don’t know the content of that video 😁
Sure, to each his own, but still…it’s lemmy, not reddit. And also this is a linux-post. I wonder how the efficiency of Linux goes with the inefficiency of videos with ads in it. But that’s just me, and I’m just annoyed by no client (that i know of) having such simple feature to just ignore video-posts, especially if it’s YouTube. Or just links to reddit or even nastier paywalls. Even if i might miss a good discussion or real information in the comments i would never see.
Though, Of course, you’re not wrong with all you said.
Oh no, don’t get me wrong. Of course Youtube isn’t evil/bad per se. It totally has a reason to exist. And of course youtubers make videos. And yes, i simply don’t consume YouTube unless i have to.
But, i am not on Youtube here. I am not here to grant someone a buck for a view. I don’t want advertisement. And i certainly don’t want videos. It personally pisses me off that i so often click on an interesting post here (lemmy in general) just to end up paywalled or in a damn video. That is all. I’d love a simple feature to opt out of posts that just advertise their youtube-video. If I’d want that, I’d go to, well, Youtube 😁
Not ranting about the existence of this video (it might be awesome, what do i know), but it’s just totally misplaced imho.
Like i wouldn’t want to browse YouTube to find videos of a picture or a text. Yeah sure it’s called “social MEDIA”, which includes all media. I’d just love to select what to consume.
You’re downvoted to oblivion for being right. Well you could’ve phrased it nore civil and friendly though 😌
I miss the Internet of the beginnings. Pure, simple and efficient information. Mostly. I’d argue the downfall slowly started with geocities and the rise of “funny” animated gifs and music in websites.
And it all went bonkers with “web2.0” and sites needing 15 fat libraries and megabytes of visual pleasures to just tell the time…
Amen. So this. I always audibly sigh at this shit. The tiniest piece of information is always wrapped into tons of useless crap and blahblah which could’ve been a highly informative block of text or a table. As if the net wasn’t already full of bloat anyway.
Termux/Rsync is nice and all, but not really a comfy fire’n’forget-solution like syncthing.
And today i heard the first time of unison sync. So i have no opinion at all here, but thanks for the hint.
Problem is, i want to exclude third parties. I’d prefer a direct heavily encrypted connection directly to my server. Definitely not a cloud somewhere, especially not google & co.
Nextcloud is way too blown up and vulnerable for me. I really only need file-synching. Got servers working for the other stuff like caldav.
This. At least until i find a better solution than syncthing. But keepass(xc) all the way.
Aye. I did learn this the good old hard way.😁
