The consumers of the product know nothing about basic design principles either. Does their opinion not matter either?

If FLOSS devs want usable interfaces (and I’m not convinced many of them do) this is the problem that needs to be solved.

So, forgive me if I’m reading too much between the lines, but what you’re saying here is if FLOSS wants better UI, they need to engage someone who says they’re an accomplished UI artist and blindly execute their vision even against their own impressions of the requested work?

Maybe there are reasons the FLOSS devs don’t want to sign up for that?

Off-Canvas Editing Paint tools can now automatically expand the width and height of a layer as you draw! You can select “Expand Layers” in the tool options to enable drawing past the current boundaries of layers.

Nothing is intuitive in that software.

UI/UX is a very very difficult job. I’ve only ever known a few UI/UX artists that were any good, and OMFG, are they expensive.

You can’t just drop everything and focus on something where you don’t have domain experts. Not to presume too much about you, but that would be like saying you need to drop everything you’re doing and focus on brain surgery next year. UI/UX is art. It’s a very specific type of art that, unfortunately, doesn’t come easy for people. There are companies for hire that work professionally on UX/UI, but they’re not cheap either. Anyone can spot bad UX, but knowing how to fix it in a way that works for everyone, that’s nearly a unicorn.

I’ve been using gimp since it was released for daily driver projects.

I’ve been using Photoshop for about a decade when required for gigs.

I can get around either app pretty decently at this point.

If you drop any new user into either, they’ll be absolutely lost.

If you drop a seasoned Photoshop user into GIMP, they’ll not only be lost but be unable to use their vast array of plugins and macros and aren’t quite (but non-technically are) impossible for the average user to work on.

We can’t make Gimp Photoshop-like. We can make strides to improve Gimp, but it’s beyond reach for the current team. Maybe we can start a crowdfund to get a UX company to take a stab at it, but even at that we’d need buy in from the developers and it would likely be an incredibly large rework, not unlike the current one that took quite a long time.

I’m only dealing with desktop browsers in this and trying to type with autocomplete from an uncomfortable position. I’m fairly certain privacy doesn’t really exist in OTC Android.

They slightly edge out brave on vanilla. Once you load all of your plugins and stuff braves a little better at lying about it. To be fair they’re both close enough it doesn’t matter either one will get the job done. I usually think of mull as a leave it vanilla and use it when you need to leave no trace.

I keep Firefox, brave, Librewolf, and Vivaldi All configured and loaded with my plugins and bookmarks.

When Google pulled out of Firefox funding I expected them to go down a dark path.

I don’t know that any of those choices of browsers are going to be significantly better than the others long-term. I’m also hoping for ladybug eventually.

LW doesn’t seem to play nice with some of my sites and some of my plugins. It’s the one I want most to work. The last time I tried it, delivering pass keys out of bitwarden in it didn’t work. And that kind of makes it a no-go for me. I should try it again though it’s been at least a year.

I’m pretty sure brave would sell my kidneys if they could. But they are the only one on the list that’s truly funded and they keep up with the Joneses on YouTube ad blocking. And there also probably the strongest browser for anti-fingerprinting at the moment.

Vivaldi seems to work okay but it’s just a Google clone, they’ve only dedicated to not enforcing manifest V3 for “as long as they could.”

No, that file is located in the nix store and linked back, If you become root and try to edit /etc/hosts It will complain that you cannot edit the linked file.

If you go and try to edit the store directly you will meet the same kind of dead ends because /nix/store is a ro bind mount

With enough root access, time and persistence you could eventually unwrap its flavor of immutability which is why I said mostly immutable. Compared to most operating systems where you can just slip a quick edit into a cron job it’s leagues ahead.

Then you have NixOS, which is declarative, and fairly immutable.

You don’t have to reboot to make changes, but you can’t just run unlinked binaries either.

You can’t do things like edit your hosts table or modify the FS for cron jobs. The application store is unwritable, but you can sync new apps into it .

You have to make changes to the config file and run a rebuild as root.

Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora or one of the offshoots like Mint or Pop.

As long as you don’t go too far into the weeds with Arch, Silverblue or NixOS, You’re probably going to have a pretty decent experience, as long as you don’t dig too far under the hood too early most things that you’re going to want to try are just going to work out of the gate.
