Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux kernel is leaving 486 CPUs behind, only 18 years after the last one made
1·1 year agoIt’s about 15 years ago I used a 486 based embedded board with ethernet, can’t remember the name of it.

9·1 year agoJust install Luanti and that will take care of the Minecraft group.
To me the leaf must mean that we toke and code, instead of code using AI tokens.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Why doesn't the Linux subreddit leave Reddit already?
2·1 year agoYou are right, it’s not very often I see fights here.
Regarding migration to Lemmy, I think it will happen
originally/slowly and in a few years the majority of questions will be asked here.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Why doesn't the Linux subreddit leave Reddit already?
10·1 year agoCorrect we only want the sour linuxers here.
I use Devuan on my servers, changed because I was annoyed that systemd was forced on me. (I have mellowed a bit since and accept that systemd is here to stay)
I chose Mint for my laptop, because I just want a OS that works and still gives me a taskbar. (Here I got fed up when Ubuntu switched away from gnome)
All of them are apt based Linux because it just works and when apt shoots itself in the foot during dist upgrades you can still wrangle it back in working order.

Programmer Humor@lemmy.ml•In case you've ever wondered why the Windows control panel was so awful...
21·1 year agoThen you have to go into a resource file and find a very specific resource ID for your control panel string, and create a new resource ID to me it to.
Ah yes the joys of working with Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC), Back in the day I supported a VS6.0 application, you have room for 65535 UI elements in an application (Including DLL’s) I had to split the ID’s up in ranges to enable adding new elements in a sane way.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How to help a person who has bad times remembering commands when using Linux.
19·1 year agoMy solutions are:
- Just arrow up until you find the command from last.
- Learn to use CTRL-r and search for old commands.
- Bash completion helps with arguments
- Save stuff in shell scripts
Brave new world, in a few years some bank or the like will be totally compromised because of some AI generated vulnerability.
That reminds me of Illiad’s UserFriendly where the non tech guy Stef creates a do_what_i_mean() function, and that goes poorly.
I would say this AI function generator is a new version of: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DWIM

Programmer Humor@lemmy.ml•question, When were programmers supposed to be obsolete?
12·2 years agoRational Rose etc. could generate code from UML diagrams, then you “only” needed architects.
In reality it only gave a little help during the design phase, as soon as someone touches the generated code, you have to manually merge changes to UML.
And 42 seconds in jython.
You have reached the pinnacle of Linux, every other distro you try from now on will seem bland. 🧗🏼
That’s easy you just use the huge number of test cases to ensure against introducing new bugs.

I was looking into learning COBOL some years ago, because i found that verbosity interesting.
And it seemed like there’s not many libs and toolboxes out there, compared to the major languages that has libs for everything, so I couldn’t really use it for small projects.

Programmer Humor@lemmy.ml•when google bought datasets from reddit
7·2 years agoEditing grub.cfg from an emergency console, or running grub-update from a chroot is a close second.
Adding the right Modeline to xorg.conf seemed more like magic when it worked. 🧙🏼
It took me a while to stop reading financed as: finance daemon.
