Your performance issues are likely not an issue with thunderbird but with your hardware or some weird filesystem. Like others in the replies I have ten years of emails stored in my thunderbird inbox and they search near instantly.
It does not matter where the mails come from (gmail or other), if you are using thunderbird or any other client to store them locally, virtually all providers have an imap and pop3 endpoint the client connects to download everything

Half the requests for help on this community are people installing outdated flatpacks or messing up some configuration giving insufficient permission to some app or another.
It does not just work. You know what just work? apt on debian.
Flatpack is a solution to a problem most people don’t have, dont use it unless you really know why you are using it. If you don’t understand why you should not use it don’t.
Also, delta files are a neat thing but if their backend can’t do it efficiently it is just stupid IMO. To me it sounds like premature optimisation, a common issue in software development.

Because snap is an absolute abomination and no one in their right mind is loosing time maintaining it. If canonical whants to push their crap on debian too, they will need to put in the time to make it work. I really hope they are not making debian developers loose their precious time on this cancer.

I never said it was impossible, I said it is not for the op. The simple fact they don’t see an apparent way to install simple tools or modify fstab would be for me unacceptable, I prefer freeballing my OS, thank you very much. I simply assumed op was more like me and less like you.
If you want to go play with /etc/fstab and you have a concept of "everyday cli tools"an immutable distro is not for you. An immutable distro is made for people that do not use a computer but use a browser.
I think that there is now a phase were the bugs that are findable by AI will be reported en masse, and there will be a period of patching them and working through the queue. After this we will end up with better software overall, which is what Linus predicted a couple months ago.
That said there still needs to be a penality for crap reports, because those are still received, making us loose time on what is functionally just spam.

The reason this person is getting downvoted with no answer to their good points is an indicator as to why the subject is sensible.
Someone (admittably an asshole) found how to solve a problem, wrote a suite that does a very good job where the alternatives were absolute crap, and all major distros started using it.
Everybody is free to write another alternative, but everybody that is capable knows that systemd is probably better than whatever they could make, so that is what almost everybody is using.
Usage and contributions data on debian and rhel, the vast majority uses systemd and does not complain about it.

People don’t care about this beacuse they will make it so that if you don’t ask questions it just works.
In the meantime those of us that need to work in these jurisdictions need to comply with the bullshit so we hope to be able to continue to work with linux, but if that won’t be possible we will be forced to write software for microsoft or whatever else in the apple crap.

I can add the two files required to run a timer in systemd in a couple minutes, but writing the complex incantation to cron for having it do something that is the default in systemd is pure pain and takes me 3 hours of googling
