I heard somewhere mysterytool.exe solves everything so get to it and obviously if it does not its because you are not a good enough technical guy.

HubertManne@piefed.socialOPto Linux@lemmy.ml•graphics drivers for bazzite download. 9xxmx equivalent to gtx 9xx???English2·11 days agoI get that but like it does not let me pick 940mx and the choices under laptop seem to be desktop choices. that made me think the choices are just about a card from the approximate era but im not sure.
yeah the only thing it makes me think about is the bbc special with tom baker talking about what hypertext could be like before it was really anything.
Its amazing now a days. I still have a windows machine because im to lazy about moving over a small use case. I can’t believe how much better my browsers which is like 90% of my usage and other programs run in linux and its hard to even pinpoint but some ways the programs react feel better but I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is.
HubertManne@piefed.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•What's a good, beginner-friendly distro that allows for easy switching between GNOME and KDE?English1·21 days agoI used to do this way back and when I saw the question I was interested in the replies and yours is the only one that I would say answer it. The only answer to me is a distro which asks you what desktops you want to install and gives you the option for several. Its great that you can install them all on any linux but hes asking beginner friendly so to me that implies you being able to install them from the get go.
HubertManne@piefed.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•Retro, vaguely windows-95-looking linux distro that's actually usable and people like it?English4·27 days agozorin has a windows like interface. I don’t think it necessarily is tracking windows 95 but really the windows like thing is really just a start menu with submenus like windows that I think have not changed much between windows 95 and now.
HubertManne@piefed.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•How much of a pain is it to install Nvidia GPU drivers, really?English2·27 days agoI mean I use zorin which is an ubuntu spin just made to be as usable as possible out of the box so its super easy. Barely an inconvenience. I see someone mentions bricking but I have not encountered it but I tend to use old hardware soooooo… oh and i should say old nough that a 4060ti would seem pretty new.
HubertManne@piefed.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•I'm grateful for being able to have a choice like Linux or even BSD family instead having only two proprietary choices: Windows or MacOS.English121·28 days agolinux really is amazing at this point and I think it can take over the desktop once people realize. There are distros that are install and go without much of a learning curve at all and wine allows for running of windows programs.
HubertManne@piefed.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•Is Libreoffice a good Microsoft Office substitute?English1·1 month agoI have not had it crash for me in years.
HubertManne@piefed.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•Is Libreoffice a good Microsoft Office substitute?English2·1 month agoIt is to me. For documents I tend to export as a pdf so there is no formatting issues on the other persons end with the file. If they ask for a microsoft format I save it as that and send it to them.
HubertManne@piefed.socialto Linux@lemmy.ml•A month with LFS (Linux From Scrath) + musl + eudev + libressl + qi package builder helper. What a great experience.English14·2 months agoI do miss the way I used to be where I would get things exactly as I want and experiment with things. Now I just want to slap something on and be using it within the hour.
You get my standard reply that I use zorin which is an ubuntu based distro that tries to give the look of feel of windows and has a lot of default installed things like wine/playonlinux, libreoffice, app for disc burning, rdp client, basically most everything I would want for day to day use. It is not necessarily the best gaming distro and its certainly not bleeding edge. Its a great install and get to doing things right away distro to me which is what I want.
wine should handle most things not in a browser. in a browser you can switch the user agent or run edge/chrome if needed. ultimately its going to vary by school, class, and instructor if one requires something that won’t run in wine. In my experience these almost do not exist because mac is very popular in academia. I mean if you take a photoshop or ms office course or such you may be expecting a bit much.
