My dad got me started programming when I was 12. He gave me the “introduction to c# copyright 2002” (dm me for the isbn if you want, I’ll have to find it later). I might have done 10% of the book before I kind of got bored and started doing whatever the fuck I wanted. By age 16 I got my first job, and then in college I always had some sort of contract… nowadays I’m working full-time.

All I have is that anecdote to say no… I really hope other people have had better experiences than me.

But if my anecdote helps then you could have potentially three to four years of teaching them how to problem solve as a skill before you teach them how to program. I’m grateful for the problem-solving skills my dad gave me.

Me: I have a problem and I need help fixing it

Other: ok but what’s the problem

Me: I can’t do this for some reason

Other: you’re wrong for wanting to do that when you can just do this instead besides you’re dumb and stupid and wrong and you should just deal

So I’d just keep changing things until my computer did what I wanted. I’d be fine using a Mac or windows if and only if it was ok to ask for help (meaning that I got to a point with a problem where I can’t move forward anymore myself and the only 2 options are to give up or ask for someone to contribute something that makes it so I can make progress)

3 - voice assistants. wether done on device or phoning into our home servers and having requests processed there, this should be doable and integrated with convenient shortcuts. Home assistant has some things like this, and there’s good-old Mycroft blowing around out there still. Siri is used every day by plenty of people and she sucks. If that’s the benchmark I think our community can easily meet that.

Of all the things that my phone is supposed to be able to do this is the one thing I never touch. It has never worked better for me than just doing it with my own two thumbs.

NixOS makes me feel so safe making low-level changes to Linux and making sure that my work laptop, gaming desktop, and personal laptop all have the exact same shit on them and I’m gonna use them the exact same way.

I wish that nixlang was decoupled from the concept of a build system bc it’s such a great DAG config DSL and I can think of so many cooler uses for it but I just don’t have time to focus on it.

I really feel compelled to share that I actually really fucking love nix. I’ve never felt so confident that my computer would turn on no problem. It was hard and it was rewarding.

Pacman like many other package managers tries to minimize network queries, to do this you download a manifest of every package available and its installation instructions. -Sy downloads the latest manifest from all of your pacman repos, -u installs the packages whose “version” field changed between the old and new manifests.
