I would check out Pop OS instead of mint. But you can easily boot both of them from usb stick and look around and get a feeling before you choose.

I think Java is worse, I still have nightmares from those Java interface names… Jesus.
I moved to Plasma… And I still dont think those rounded buttons looks good in 2025.
I used to switch between plasma and gnome but that stopped with plasma 6. It was so good that it just became my primary. Now gnome feels bad when I try it. Everything looks bad there. No proper fractional scaling support, no hdr support etc etc.
I used this for a while but the fastmail web interface is actually good enough… I use thunderbird for cleaning up and deleting stuff, and organizing… There it shines.
All my stuff is on a network drive (movies and other big files). All configuration of apps is in git (their config files).
Makes it easy to start over.
I just reinstall apps I need, it’s so simple with Linux and package managers handling it all.
Hacker news users seem happy with its performance, so will try tomorrow. Fun with new terminals.
You won’t get the same united look in Gnome as in mac OS. Applications will look a bit different and not exactly the same.
I think you get used to it though. I don’t think about it at all anymore.
Nice idea but yeah, Ai stuff is a bit tacky. :)
Maybe it depends on where you live. For me it’s close to useless.
Systemd-boot is the simplest, it just works.
“Your Computer”.
Graphics bugs are from the graphics drivers most of the time (but not always). I reported quite a few bugs in kde 5 about window decorations looking/acting weird, and it got fixed quickly.
I used to switch between gnome and plasma all the time but since plasma 6 came out and I switched to a 4k screen, I’ve been sticking with plasma without any issues. Gnome actually looks bad now on 4k for me. :)
I needed a laugh, thank you.
Plasma is just the most excellent software, and it’s managing to be much better than windows while being free.
My plasma 6 desktop has absolutely stunning icons, and im like you - I like proper icons that look more interesting.
Try plasma 6, I’m sure those icon sets are also much more complete. :)
I tried to find where it was but can’t find it…
I also had bugs around window rules to be honest.
Good for you and have fun.
Depends on your setup. If you use a 4k screen with fractional scaling in Gnome, Pycharm and all Jetbrain editors have blurry text and run under xwayland.
But vs code works fine, also zed and many others.
