Open Source@lemmy.ml•OpenTS is a new open-source reconstruction of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun
35·1 month agoYou don’t do open source software?
Do you understand open source licenses?
A big premise of that is attributation. If you don’t give appropriate credit, you’re in breach of license. The code AI used didn’t allow it to be distributed without it. They stole from that person.
We’re talking about the worker, not the bourgeoisie. Their labour was exploited to benefit a corporate entity. And you’re consuming stolen proceeds from the bourgeoisie and defending their contributions.

107·1 month agoDamn. Imagine shilling for big AI companies because you gain something. Those companies stole from people to sell it. Where are your principles?

Linux@lemmy.ml•What are the worst distro-specific problems you have faced?
7·2 months agoOpenSuse TW. Network seems to be permission based. If I’m connected to the Internet on one user and someone logs in, they cannot connect without my pass. Quite ridiculous.
Oh, and I used to hibernate. Then it stopped working. Now I try to sleep and that sporadically fails requiring restart.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux 7.2 finally cuts off ancient x86 fallback code
3·2 months agoWhy don’t you support a Linux distro that runs on prehistoric hardware?
It’s very easy to spend other peoples time than offer your own for something you clearly don’t care enough about.
If you missed the comment. Previous kernel version is supported until 2035. That’s 9 more years. You need any longer than that?

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux desktop use spikes to over 10% in North America for the first time. There is also a corresponding drop in Windows and OSX use.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Billionaire Bill Ackman: Microsoft is a great business. Microsoft 365 package has 450M users. It would be nearly impossible to disrupt that
7·4 months agoAll because they throw it into b2b with teams and ado and windows and whatever other shit they call software.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Audacity 4.0 beta lets you test its new (and much nicer) Qt interface
1·4 months agoMy issue is that corporate folk behind this attempted to do this. IMHO, the stewardship of the project is all wrong, and the motives questionable. It did feel like you were defending their actions. Corporate influence is not a defining aspect of open source for me. Its an unfortunate problem that ultimately leads to the true dilemma. Open source is about sharing and giving your time freely, corporate goals is how can we profit from our position in this project.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Audacity 4.0 beta lets you test its new (and much nicer) Qt interface
22·4 months agoThrough pushing through user antagonistic changes completely at odds with users wants and hoping people are pliable enough to forget all about trying to be screwed so you can bide time until the next at attempt to screw users?
Well, that’s the vibe I’m getting from you. I naively assumed open source was based on trust, shared effort and contributions to benefit users so they can install software on their machine that they know is reliable/trustworthy and privacy focussed because anyone can scrutinise it. Silly me.

31·4 months agoSo they raised a PR with the intention to do this?
Are you saying the only reason they backtracked is because users weren’t happy?

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Can Open-Source AI Bring Translation Back Under User Control?
4·4 months agoGot a complaint that this is an ad. We don’t really have a rule against that and I’d assume in an open source community, sharing repos and projects is part of it. There is a repo link.
I’ll allow it. Discuss as you will.

9·5 months agoSource available fails on principles of open source. Such as the right to modify and distribute.
Oh do tell… As I think you don’t understand how LLMs work…
Like AI can tell good code from bad. Just common vs uncommon usage.

36·7 months agoIs GTFS short for Get The Fucking Schedule?
I want it to be true.
Shame he didn’t spend time reading up on SOLID principles, clean code, refactoring and TDD. Sounds like Jr parading as a senior. Product nerd != good developer.
Most seniors got burned so much, they refuse to build complex unsupportable stuff. KISS is king with top devs.
The fact this dude has the most experience says everything about your orgs hiring processes. Cheaping out on senior salaries.

Thanks for sharing this. Maybe correct tagging could be useful. Makes it easier to ignore but not overly heavy and possibly toxic.
