Between Steam promoting Linux and GOG promoting DRM-free software, I will never purchase from another storefront that doesn’t even pretend to do something good for the broader community (Origin, Uplay, Microsoft Battle.Net, iOS App Store, etc).

Just yesterday I asked Llama 3.3 70B params how to do something. I was pretty sure it wouldn’t be able to tell me the right command to run because I knew beforehand I was asking it something really obscure about how to use tar. I gave it all the relevant details. Imagine my surprise when it… told me the blatantly wrong thing. It even invented useless ways of running the command incorrectly.

There is another issue on their tracker that was opened many years ago about relicensing to GPL, but it kind of became one of those things where a bunch of people came in and discussed it back and forth to death with no resolution.

I remember the lead developer of the Rust version of Coreutils gave a talk about the project once and he addressed the licensing question by essentially saying (paraphrasing), “I don’t care about this. So I just picked one.” You’d think someone so involved with open source as that guy (seriously, he has a hugely impressive pedigree) would care, or would at least give a justification.

The rust coreutils project choosing the MIT license is just another gambit to allow something like android or chromeos happen to gnu+linux, where all of the userland gets replaced by proprietary junk.

You’re right. I wasn’t familiar with rawtherapee but just seeing that home page immediately clued me into the fact that it was some kind of image program. Didn’t even need to read a single word.

Hell yeah. My favorite shell for almost 5 years, now. It was definitely an adjustment trying to get away from Bash-isms, and everything shell-related online essentially expects Bash. But it’s just like their tagline says, it’s a shell for the 90s. It’s great.

You’ve heard it several times, now, but once again: Asahi works really well for what it is, but it’s definitely a compromised experience. For example, on my M1 Macbook Air I cannot plug in a USB-C dongle and then plug in an external monitor. The driver support just isn’t there. I think if I had an Macbook Pro with a built-in HDMI port I would be able to use that… but alas, I do not.

If you want to use macOS and then use Linux on the side now and again in a dual boot setup, sure. If you want to use 100% Linux on your computer… there are better supported options.

Here is a table of supported features but it isn’t really the full picture, because it doesn’t give you a clear view of things like putting the computer on standby consumes more idle power than it does with macOS, or drivers for hardware video decoding don’t exist, so all video is software decoded. The processors can do it really well, actually, but obviously it’s more power-efficient when it’s done by dedicated hardware.

I replace the <default, slow, annoying to use> image viewer with qimgv, which is ergonomic and very fast.

It’s also a bit sad when it has a facade that looks like a competitor’s proprietary offering, but you then peek under the hood a bit further and the finer details of polish, functionality, and taste are missing.

Love it all the same, but I can’t pretend it’s not a shortcoming.

You’ve gotten good responses already, but I just live and let live with Gnome’s Mutter & KDE’s Kwin. It’s worth mentioning that they’re both highly polished offerings. But I would also understand why one wouldn’t want to use either.

Since it’s an old acer netbook with an Intel atom cpu it is highly unlikely it has any hardware decoding built in.

The only charitable read of this is the end-user bypassing controls on company-supplied computers.

Of course that doesn’t mean that they won’t also shove secure boot, hw lockouts, DRM, etc on regular consumer laptops as well.

Try running a command like vulkaninfo --summary.

Then try running VK_DRIVER_FILES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json vulkaninfo --summary (alternatively, just try running whatever else it is you use that reports you only have lavapipe available). See if there’s a difference and if it finally reports the hardware being used.
