18·22 days agoThere are many, varied motivations for contributing to open source projects, and most of them aren’t a sense of altruism.
It’s great PR to market open source in utopian terms, but the reality is far more complicated.
The Apache web server wasn’t created out of the goodness of people’s hearts but out of mid-90s internet startups’ need for a reliable, scalable platform on which to profitably run services.

37·3 months agoHardly anyone but Ubuntu users use snap, because snap was created by Ubuntu, and their efforts to get other distros to adopt it never gained traction. Debian users are especially uninterested in using snap, and some people on Debian are ex-Ubuntu users who switched because they didn’t like snap.

I though that was mostly due to Linus being a typical Russia-hating Finn, but I never investigated.
