3 months agoNetbooks, haven’t seen them in a decade. They were sluggish at best even running linux. The screens were awful. Seriously, I can’t recommend. A refurbished 10” tablet with a bluetooth keyboard would work 10 times better.

15·4 months agoI too have been in the industry for many a decade and I heartily concur. I do have many colleagues though that also have been in for many years, and those are still dedicated believers. Maybe their critical thinking has been eaten away by all the lead in soldering tin?

Best way IMHO is copy all the files to another disk, double check and then format the partition into your favourite filesystem, and copy everything back. NTFS can be a bit of trouble.
VBox could be nice, but Oracle is on a licensing hunt for people who install the extension pack on potentially work-related systems. Technically it is free for personal use, but is like explicitly inviting the vampire into your home - nothing might happen, but you wouldn’t know until the moment you have 2 tiny holes in your neck.
You only have loopback addresses, that won’t work at all. Odd. Unless Ubuntu doesn’t use dhcp. You can try eg “sudo dhclient” or do a manual configuration in the range of your modem (eg ip 192.168.1.2, netmask /24 aka 255.255.255.0, gw 192.168.1.1, dns 9.9.9.9).

Is your IP address 169.254.x.y by any chance? That would mean you can actually “see” the network but have no usable address (169.254.x.y is APIPA, you could say a fallback basically when no dhcp is available). Try “ip addr” on the commandline or “ifconfig” for us oldtimers
- is the wifi adapter recognised?
- do you have an ip address from your router/modem? generally 192.1698.x.y
- what’s the dns server address? see eg https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-linux-bsd-unix-set-dns-nameserver/
- can you ping your router / modem?
- can you pathping/traceroute/tracepath/… the site?
- can you ping/traceroute/… other sites?
My whole life with computers the fanbois du jour told me we had reached excellent usability. We’re talking GEOS, FVWM, the shit Sun and Digital Equipment Corp threw at us, up until Windows 10 and KDE or what have you: there will always come a point when you need or want to have a look under the hood. And there things can be alien, overly complex and very inconsistent and undocumented. That is the path every real user will walk one day, and it’s not pretty. Best of luck on your journeys!
