Do one thing and do it well. Oh well…

taiidan@slrpnk.netto Open Source@lemmy.ml•Which FOSS projects have enough funding that we should donate elsewhere?2·4 months agoWe have a all-in-one keyboard and mouse. Labeled function keys to start streaming services with Chrome in kiosk mode. Obviously, mouse to navigate is in some ways more work than a remote, but actually much faster. Similarly, typing for a search is way faster with keyboard. Side benefit is that it’s larger size means it won’t get lost in the couch cushions.
taiidan@slrpnk.netto Open Source@lemmy.ml•Which FOSS projects have enough funding that we should donate elsewhere?2·4 months agoI have a low power nuc that I use to watch TV. All streaming services + KODI or whatever. I don’t know why I would use some proprietary dongle. I prefer FOSS.

You could use
newsboat -x reload && newsboat -x print-unread
as a good start to get the status of unread articles and print a notification (for example usingdunst
) when the number increases.

vifm
with thetree
command.
I use
sway
ori3
compositor to launch various streaming sites in Chrome or Firefox in kiosk mode. Also Kodi and Steam. I have shortcuts for these mapped to function keys on a combo keyboard touchpad. Works well as support for streaming services in Kodi is not comprehensive

taiidan@slrpnk.netto Linux@lemmy.ml•where on debian 12.8 do I find the thumbnails directory?2·5 months agoMaybe it’s desktop environment dependent. Better to help yourself by:
find / -iregex '.*jpg$' -o -iregex '.*jpeg$'
I like Kitty Graphics. I like graphics in the terminal for two reasons:
- integration with MC (midnight commander) style directory browser to show previews of jpegs, pdfs, etc.
- w3m web browser. I like being able to use that super-light weight webrowser when working/coding to keep me focused.
Reason (1.) works with Kitty. (2.) does not. (2.) is pretty esoteric so I think sixel will probably die out soon due to the user base?
Do one thing and do it well…or compete with one of the largest computing firms in the world to develop a 💩version of commercial software. Captivating…
