Probably either KDE or NsCDE, I always seem to come back to those

“I found this via an LLM”
“Here’s a made up answer”
Fedora Atomic?
I got a $12 10 inch Asus eeepc 1005ha that I have NetBSD with i3 on and it’s perfectly usable, so something similar to that would probably be fine for linux cli stuff as long as a 32 bit cpu is okay
Since sometime around Plasma 4, KDE has been the name of the organization and Plasma had been the name of the desktop.
I remember my school had no idea how you should set up computers before letting first graders use them so we were all constantly dragging all the applications into the trash can to hear the fun noise and see the little puff of dust.
They also all had a copy of Type to Learn Jr installed, which we were strictly forbidden from opening, and every time we were using the computers multiple people would get in trouble for playing it. A few years ago I got a couple of cheap iBook G3 laptops and the first thing I did was install Type to Learn Jr and finally play it all the way through
I’ve been meaning to buy one of those forever, we had them in elementary school and they were fun
There’s actually a hack to make sync automatic, I’ve been using it and it works perfectly https://github.com/draumaz/kdeconnectbidirectionalclipboard
I bought one last summer and the only problems I’ve had were some display issues which were solved by adding kernel parameters to disable all of the amdgpu power management (which as far as I can tell doesn’t even increase power usage noticeably). Other than that it has been basically perfect and way better than any other laptop I’ve had. I wish it had real suspend, but that’s just not possible on modern CPUs so that’s not Framework’s fault
I’m not sure how underrated it is but the exec feature in find
is so useful, there are so many bulk tasks that would just be incredibly difficult otherwise but instead are just one line
Interesting, I would absolutely hate using something like that for actual use but it does seem like it could be useful for like demonstrations and documentation
One of my friends with a similar list of skills on indeed got an email from them asking him to apply to be a bikini model
A customizable shortcut key would be so good. I’ve tried to set that up on my own to be alt because that’s what Haiku uses but it’s just impossible to get very many applications to follow it. Probably there’s no way to consistently do it without getting every application to follow some standard for determining what it should be.
If you want a coherent motif-ish theme, NsCDE is amazing. It themes like everything in the world and is honestly like the most consistent looking desktop I’ve ever used

Do NOT give the carrot industry that idea
I like how their AI generated logo doesn’t even spell the name right
Yeah but I bet google’s one will have lots of cool features like being harder to use and not supporting becoming root and requiring google play services for no discernable reason
For text editing, kate is really good and has like zero learning curve and it has tons of features like really good lsp integration but can also just be a normal text editor if you don’t want all the fancy stuff.
(But also I promise learning vim isn’t as hard as you think it is, you can learn the basics in like an hour or two and there are so many things it makes so much easier than other editors)
Kate is so good, I switched to it once atom was discontinued and only stopped using it when I finally got around to setting up neovim to have all the things I need
The one single thing I can’t stand about my Framework is the lack of S3 suspend, meaning I regularly have my laptop completely run down in situations my old one never would, even with its worn out battery. Unfortunately that’s not Framework’s fault and there’s nothing you can get with S3 if you want a newish CPU
