It’s how they kept everything from dying when they killed third party apps. They openly banned and replaced mods that were keeping their subreddits locked. It was a shitshow, but unfortunately reddit still exists.
For the record, Sea Of Thieves is also available as a standalone purchase through Steam, bypassing the Microsoft Store and their half abandoned UWP format entirely. Never had any issues with the Steam version on Windows.
Don’t feel dumb! This is just normal learning!
Symlinks are possible in Windows (at least in NTFS filesystems) but to my knowledge they aren’t used by anything official.
Windows’s weird “psuedo folders” thing it does with “Documents” etc is something else entirely.
Man, now I want to see a “cursed terminals” thing take off like the “cursed UI” stuff did.
I find it helps to have a separated space from the business folks, or work from home.
One of the reasons I know I’m on a good team is I’ll mumble something like “What the actual fuck? That shouldn’t be possible.” and I’ll hear a coworker chuckle and say something like “So it’s not just me having one of those days!”
PowerShell does that by default, and it’s my least favorite feature in my most used language.
$ErrorActionPreference = Stop
At the start of almost every script.
Yup. Regulatory and audit requirements are a motherfucker.
Also, I don’t mean to speak down to devs, but as a rule of thumb you tend to think far higher of your skills just because you know the building blocks. Being able to build a boat doesn’t mean you know how to sail.
I know multiple people who are prodigous developers but know jack shit about basic computer usage and security. People who had to be guided to the control panel in Windows. Yes, even after they added the search bar. People hired to work in an exclusively Windows enterprise environment.
Now add that amount of potential that lack of basic operational skill carries for fucking things up to the least competent (or at minimum the least careful) co-worker on your dev team.
You (any dev reading this) as an individual would probably never fuck up that badly. You (any dev reading this) would probably do everything right, correct, and wouldn’t cause problems with root. But the rules aren’t written to protect against the competent, or against people never making mistakes.
Using the same source ports that run them on Linux, but on Windows instead, is not a significant hurdle or differentiator between the OSes.
It’s very simple. The US government maintains a list of sanctioned entities and companies. US citizens and businesses are not allowed to do business with these entities. Most of the removed maintainers either used their company email, or very publicly are employees of these sanctioned companies.
There’s no investigation of connections or anything complicated going on here.
Also, if you think corporations becoming effective government is some Russia specific thing, I have a bridge to sell you.
He’s practically always been like this. If anything he’s notably softened with age.
From being able to work on Linux stuff without having their contributions reviewed by someone else (not from russia).
It’s an important distinction many seem to miss.
Not content with unasked for evangelizing in Windows communities and posts, this Stallman’s Witness tries their hand in an even less welcome locale.
Injured by the failure of their attempt, they seek sympathy back in friendlier climes.
Even so, why post this and not any one of countless other things?
Like I feel that you’re missing a clear sign here. Most people would roll their eyes and move on. This is quite possibly the most “leopards ate my face” post in this community and yet it’s being upvoted because “hooray tribalism” over something as asinine as OS (really kernel) choice.
Then why did you bother posting here complaining about it?
The maintainer of the Apple M1 branch said that they literally showed up to the lead dev’s home in Brazil in a comment on Reddit.
It won’t effect the core.
The last time he threatened this was the last time he changed his license, because of retroarch making a core of Duckstation in the first place. The Duckstation dev seems to have a real problem with anyone using his code, down to declining bug fix pull requests because he was pissed off at the people complaining about the bug in the first place.
He claimed Retroarch violated the licensing when they made it a core. Not sure if they actually did or not. Wouldn’t put it past them as the Retroarch lead devs have done shit like that before. So then they forked his code from before the original license change and used it to make the Swanstation core.
I honestly thought that the Duckstation dev had followed through with his threat years ago and had stopped development.
Either way, it’s best to just ignore emulator dev drama like this. Just use the best software and ignore the authors. Unfortunately a lot of them have personality and/or psychological issues that lead to a disproportianate amount of drama.

Probably weirder than you’re looking for, but fun.
Honestly that’s most things in life.
The more complex your project, the more likely you are to run into the rough patches or quirks of whatever it is you’re working with.
Yes, the price is the point. Excel (Office) is that dirt fucking cheap, industry standard, and comes with a bunch of other shit included that can be legitimate value add for a small business.
If you’re at a firm that has legitimate need for specialized accounting software, you’ll have enough money to get those. But even those generally export to Excel format. Without outing myself too much, I’ve had comsiderable exposure to financial tech over the last decade and less than 10 specialized accounting softwares I’ve seen couldn’t export to Excel. All of those still exported to csv, or “software agnostic excel” if we want to bend things a bit.
The power of being industry standard for going on 30 years now cannot be overstated.
